BWV 197 - "Gott ist unser Zuversicht"


Wedding Cantata
Erster Teil 1. Chor Gott ist unsre Zuversicht, Wir vertrauen seinen Händen. Wie er unsre Wege führt, Wie er unser Herz regiert, Da ist Segen aller Enden.	Part One 1. Chorus God is our confidence, we trust in His hands. How he leads our ways, how he directs our hearts, that is the ultimate blessing.
2. Rezitativ B Gott ist und bleibt der beste Sorger, Er hält am besten haus. Er führet unser Tun zuweilen wunderlich, Jedennoch fröhlich aus, Wohin der Vorsatz nicht gedacht. Was die Vernunft unmöglich macht, Das füget sich. Er hat das Glück der Kinder, die ihn lieben, Von Jugend an in seine Hand geschrieben.	2. Recitative B God is and remains the best caretaker, He manages affairs the best. At times He guides our doings marvelously, each one to a happy outcome, which our intention had not considered. What reason holds impossible, comes to pass. He has the fortune of children, those who love Him, from childhood on inscribed in His hand.
3. Arie A Schläfert allen Sorgenkummer In den Schlummer Kindlichen Vertrauens ein. Gottes Augen, welche wachen Und die unser Leitstern sein, Werden alles selber machen.	3. Aria A All troublesome worries fall asleep in the slumber of childlike trust. God’s eyes, which watch over and are our guiding stars, will take care of it all themselves.
4. Rezitativ B Drum folget Gott und seinem Triebe. Das ist die rechte Bahn. Die führet durch Gefahr Auch endlich in das Kanaan Und durch von ihm geprüfte Liebe Auch an sein heiliges Altar Und bindet Herz und Herz zusammen, Herr! Sei du selbst mit diesen Flammen!	4. Recitative B Therefore follow God and His promptings. That is the right path. It leads through danger at last into Canaan and through love, tested by Him, also to his holy altar and binds heart together with heart. Lord! Be You Yourself among these flames!
5. Choral Du süße Lieb, schenk uns deine Gunst, Laß uns empfinden der Liebe Brunst, Daß wir uns von Herzen einander lieben Und in Fried auf einem Sinne bleiben. Kyrie eleis! ("Nun bitten wir den Heiligen Geist," verse 3)	5. Chorale O sweet love, send us Your favor, let us feel the flame of love, that we might love one another from our hearts and peacefully remain of one mind. Kyrie eleis!
Zweiter Teil 6. Arie B O du angenehmes Paar, Dir wird eitel Heil begegnen, Gott wird dich aus Zion segnen Und dich leiten immerdar, O du angenehmes Paar!	Part Two 6. Aria B O you pleasant pair, pure well-being will accompany you, God will bless you out of Sion and guide you always. O you pleasant pair!
7. Rezitativ S So wie es Gott mit dir Getreu und väterlich von Kindesbeinen an gemeint, So will er für und für Dein allerbester Freund Bis an das Ende bleiben. Und also kannst du sicher gläuben, Er wird dir nie Bei deiner Hände Schweiß und Müh Kein Gutes lassen fehlen. Wohl dir, dein Glück ist nicht zu zählen.	7. Recitative S Just as God has been disposed faithfully and fatherly towards you from childhood, so He will for ever and ever remain Your very best friend until the end. And therefore you can surely believe He will never permit any good to be lacking for you among the sweat and toil of your hands. Congratulations, your happiness is immeasurable.
8. Arie S Vergnügen und Lust, Gedeihen und Heil Wird wachsen und stärken und laben. Das Auge, die Brust Wird ewig sein Teil An süßer Zufriedenheit haben.	8. Aria S Pleasure and delight, prosperity and health will increase and grow and nourish. The eye, the breast will always have its share of sweet contentment.
9. Rezitativ B Und dieser frohe Lebenslauf Wird bis in späte Jahre währen. Denn Gottes Güte hat kein Ziel, Die schenkt dir viel, Ja, mehr, als selbst das Herze kann begehren. Verlasse dich gewiß darauf.	9. Recitative B And this happy lifetime will last many years. For God’s goodness has no termination, it gives you much, indeed, more than the heart itself can want. Rely assuredly on this.
10. Choral So wandelt froh auf Gottes Wegen, Und was ihr tut, da tut getreu! Verdienet eures Gottes Segen, Denn der ist alle Morgen neu: Denn welcher seine Zuversicht Auf Gott setzt, den verläßt er nicht. ("Wer nur der lieben Gott läßt walten," verse 7)	10. Chorale Then wander happily on God’s pathways, and whatever you do, do it faithfully! Earn the blessing of your God, for it is renewed every morning: for whoever places his confidence in God, He will never forsake.
