Motet Notes
Heinrich Schütz: "Ich bin eine rufende Stimme," SWV 383
- Geistliche Chormusik
As if to focus on the solitary voice of John the Baptist, we hear an
initial single choral voice for two full measures. The intent is narrative;
we experience the arduous desert, the stern command to prepare the way,
the water images, and finally the close imitation when John announces
that another follows closely behind. The final picture of the shoe-unloosening
moves in inversion, illustrating the gesture.
