Bruckner, most famous today for his vast, sprawling symphonies, was also remarkable church musician, becoming the organist of the Linz cathedral and eventually the court in Vienna. Today’s motet, Christus factus est, takes its text from Philippians 2:8-9, exploring the "obedient" death of Jesus on the cross. It is the most symphonic of his motets, displaying wide dynamic contrasts and rich harmonies that gradually develop harmonic tension, building to memorable climaxes and then easing away.
